Character and temperament
Malamutes are a dominant breed and must be socialised. They require a confident and firm handler. They do not make good guard dogs as they hardly ever bark. Malamutes are not overly intelligent, but once taught they are very competent.
Malamutes were bred for hauling heavy loads by Inuits. They are designed for power and not for speed.
Large and solid with a waterproof coat. Can be black, grey or red with white markings.
A standard diet is fine if kept as a pet. But if used to work (pulling sleds) a performance diet is necessary.
2 hours day. Malamutes have loads of energy and require hard exercise. They can have a tendency to run off.
Grooming is required everyday as they moult heavily. Dogs shed their coats once a year, whereas bitches shed their coats twice in a year. Malanutes have no odour.
